Ameline grew up in Brittany, in western France, studied business administration in Paris, and emigrated to Canada in 1961, after a year at Queen's University on an exchange scholarship. He pursued a career as a marketing executive until early retirement in 1994. After teaching part-time at York University for a few years, he began taking art courses at the Haliburton School of The Arts as a post-retirement challenge. He studied acrylics under John Leonard, Steve Rose and Brian Atyeo and has been a member of the Rails End for two years.
