2012/13 SEASON BLUES ON THE RIDEAU @ THE COVE INN, WESTPORT, ON
It’s time to look forward to another great season of BLUES ON THE RIDEAU! Celebrating it’s 8th year this has become one of the premier Blues Series in the country. The combination of a delicious buffet dinner and being able to see and dance to some of Canada’s best blues bands up close and personal in the friendly, intimate setting of The Cove has proven to be a real winner. Proceeds from every show go to support different local charities. $38,000 has been raised since the Series started and another $7,000 is expected this year.

It’s another fabulous Line-Up for 2012/13 – a combination of the most popular acts who’ve played here before and some exciting new talent. The Series starts October 26 and will continue once a month until May (excluding December). There will be a total of 11 shows this season – 2 two-night stands (Friday & Saturday) and 3 singles (Friday only). Most occur on the third weekend of the month. Times are the same for all shows – 7 to 11 pm. Despite increased costs the ticket price will remain the same as last year - $60 which includes a delicious full course buffet dinner, dancing and the donation to the charity.

May 17 - ROBIN BANK$ BAND

From Toronto - a dynamite vocalist and 3X Maple Blues Award nominee Robin sings Blues, Soul and R&B equally well with passion, power and clarity. Now she’s back in Toronto and about to do a new album produced by Duke Robillard who has stated that "Robin Banks has got soul, class and most of all, good taste".

Fri.Jun.21
DRUMHAND (World/Jazz Horn & Percussion Quintet, Toronto)
Hands, sticks and mallets pound out old and new rhythms on weathered skins: evoking ancient forms of ʻmessagingʼ via global beats for dancing bodies and curious ears! The
Toronto ensemble was founded by percussionists David Chan, Larry Graves and Steve Mancuso in 2008 in an effort to combine the circuitous rhythms of West Africa, Cuba,
India and Brazil with the jazz-imbued horn work in the spirit of New Orleans parade bands and the uplifting spirit of American Roots Music.
With layered drumming and poly-meter at the core, many of DRUMHANDʼs accessible and edgy compositions feature the one-stringed ʻstomach harpʼ of Brazil or the boxshaped Gome foot-drum of West Africa alongside the woodwind explorations of Marcus Ali (Cruzao/Jason Wilson) and brass love of Rebecca Hennessy (Hobsonʼs Choice/Woodshed Orchestra). The groupʼs ʻfolkloricʼ-style vocals appear in a variety of
languages and sometimes offer audiences a part in the show.
Three albums and several tour miles later, DRUMHAND is becoming increasingly known for innovative orchestrations; dynamic and uplifting performance energy; and artistic accessibility for audiences of all ages. Their unique inclusiveness can be experienced in concert at festivals; school performances; music venues; street parties and nightclubs across Canada and the US.
“The Travelling Scheme isn't merely marching music for carnal, lascivious festivities, nor is it intended for
passive admiration. Although brimming with joy, it has nobler intentions... its multicultural, Zen-like
orchestration makes you wish that people's international ideologies could blend as seamlessly and
harmoniously as musical cultures do, when in the right hands.”

ILA VANN Soul Music Pioneer, Survivor
www.ilavann.com
Ila Vann got her start singing gospel with her family in chuch, and on their own local radio show. Along the way they sang with The Blind Boys of Alabama, The Staple Singers, Clara Ward and Sam Cooke. Ila’s friendship with Sam led to her first recording contract with Arnold Records.
A switch to Roulette Records brought a more polished production style on songs like ‘Can’t Help Loving That Man’, from the musical ‘Showboat’, with a soulful twist. This song later became a huge hit on the Northern Soul circuit in England.
Following this release, Ila decided to break her contract with Roulette, after receiving no promotion for any of her releases.
Ila’s friendship with songwriter Helen Miller offered her the chance to help sell the Broadway musical ‘Inner City’, written by Miller and Eve Merriam. The show opened on Broadway without Ila, after a producer thought she wasn’t ‘black’ enough to play her role. When it came time to release a single from the show, everyone involved wanted Ila to record it. ‘My Mother Said’ was released in 1972 on Pickwick International Productions, along with the magnificent B-side, ‘You Made Me This Way’. This song was another big hit in Britain. It was also written by Helen Miller.
In the seventies, Ila toured with the USO. She also toured extensively with the group Business Before Pleasure in Quebec, Canada. Since moving to Ontario, she has led a number of talented bands and has worked on many other projects. She’s continued to be a sought after solo performer as well as providing distinct harmonies for pop greats such as Frank Sinatra, Kenny Rogers, Barry Manilow, Ray Charles, Mahalia Jackson and Louis Armstrong.
Ila Vann is a vastly underrated performer – recognition of her contributions to the Soul Music genre is long overdue. She is the kind of performer that you’ll never forget. Bubbling with energy and full of life, she continues to perform in cities and towns around Eastern Ontario, Canada – Kingston, Belleville, Trenton, Brockville and others.
